EAGLE-EYED police operatives attached to the Inspector-General of Police Special Task Force on Petroleum and Illegal Bunkering (IGP-STFPIB) have smashed a ring of suspected smugglers of petroleum products at Obollo-Afor in Enugu State.

The officers intercepted and arrested drivers of two suspected open-body crude oil-laden trucks – a Man-Diesel, marked LGT 775 XA and a DAF, with registration number FKY 245 YF.

The suspected crude oil was concealed in 76  GeePee tanks and covered with tarpaulin.

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi disclosed this development in a statement, stating that “Upon sighting our personnel, the drivers attempted to flee and resist arrest, but they were eventually apprehended by the vigilant officers“, noting that each truck was laden with 38 GeePee tanks.

According to the FPRO, the exhibits, comprising the trucks and the contraband, have been securely impounded at the Obollo-Afor Divisional Police Headquarters, while further investigation into the matter is currently ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) remained committed to combating economic saboteurs such as petroleum smuggling, bunkering and the likes, and will continue to work tirelessly to dismantle their operations.

The IGP, however, urged well-meaning members of the public to always cooperate with the Police “by providing timely and relevant information necessary for curbing these criminal activities in our society”.
