AUGUSTINE Owen Eguavoen is a Nigerian ex-player, he was a defender during his time, and he contributed immensely as a player to the growth of Nigeria’s football.

Augustine Eguavoen on retirement showed interest in coaching and was given Nigerian league job opportunities multiple times with the following teams, Gombe United, Sunshine Stars, Enyimba, and Bendel Insurance, unfortunately, he never had a good outing with any of these teams although he had a decent journey with the aforementioned at least he never relegated any of the teams.

Augustine Eguavoen, despite his humble beginning in coaching, never relented and went ahead to seek national team assignment as a coach.  Luckily, he was considered and given a second chance in coaching, this time around he was given a higher responsibility to manage the under20 team where he was saddled with the responsibility to groom young talents and build a good youth team.  Unfortunately, he failed at the end of the assignment and was later sacked.

Eguavoen’s quest for coaching persisted and he showed up again when the under23 coaching job was vacant, he pushed through and was again handed a golden opportunity to qualify the team for the Olympics and do the needful as a coach, Eguavoen tried his best but his best wasn’t enough he was later sacked,

In 2010 he landed a Super Eagles coaching job which he also failed and was replaced. Fast forward to 2021 when he was given the opportunity to take Nigeria to the Nation’s Cup. He was eliminated in the second round, yet Nigerians felt he needed another chance. He was handed the responsibility to qualify Nigeria for the World Cup which was billed to hold in Qatar, Augustine Eguavoen failed to qualify Super Eagles for the World Cup and was sacked.

The question begging for an answer is, who appointed Eguavoen Technical Director of Nigeria Football Federation?

The position of a Technical Director is sensitive and paramount to the success of every football nation and team.

A Technical Director is someone who is fully equipped to the brim in terms of a technical and tactical approach in football, someone who is sound in the business of football, someone who draws a roadmap for national teams and designs a playing pattern for the teams, someone whose knowledge in football management is tested and trusted in football management and administration.

Augustine Eguavoen doesn’t have what it takes to occupy such a sensitive position in a country with sound football administrators like Nigeria, Eguavoen lacks technical experience to occupy such a sensitive position.

Nigeria has a sound technical director who is perfectly doing well in Europe, his last Europe job was at Chelsea, where he held the position of Technical Director, Mr Emenalo.

Sheyi Olofinjana is another sound Technical Director doing pretty well in Europe, Nigeria has a lot of these sound minds and needs to make use of such talents to build her football body.

National football is seasonal. The names mentioned above can come in occasionally to do the needful rather than having Eguavoen as a Technical Director of NFF at large.

It’s been ten years down the line to date that Nigeria has been losing sensitive matches due to a lack of technical know-how to manage sensitive games. This has shown that the Technical Department of the Nigeria Football Federation is faulty and needs to be addressed timely.
