THE presidential candidate of the Labour Party, (LP) in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi, has cited the failure to carry out wide consultation with key stakeholders by Mr Julius Abure-led leadership as one of the reasons he stayed away from the party’s National Convention held in Anambra State.

Speaking Friday night, 29 March while having a chat with supporters via Twitter Space, the former Anambra State governor said he promised to rebuild Nigeria and not to build the party.

Mr Obi spoke amid the festering crisis within the party that some stakeholders believe may tear the party apart before the 2027 general elections.

We promised to build Nigeria, we did not promise to build a New Labour Party,” Obi said on Twitter Space while throwing his weight behind the call for a structure for the ‘Obidient’ movement.

He added; “It is the standard practice around the world where movements form themselves into blocs and are part of the political process”.

The LP flagbearer stressed the need for the right thing to be done to salvage the party, adding that he is more passionate about building a new Nigeria than building a new Labour Party.

Meanwhile, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Spokesperson, Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, announced that INEC disowned the convention.
