AFTER nine years in the saddle, Aliou Cissé has thrown in the towel as the head coach of the Teranga Lions “for personal reasons”.

This announcement may not be of a surprise to many following the elimination of the Sénégal national team in the round 16th stage of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)  in La Côte d’Ivoire.

The Teranga Lions were, if not the clearest favourite, then one of the favourites to win the AFCON and of course make history by defending the title.

Aliou Cissé, a legend of the Sénégal football fraternity, has really paid his dues in terms of spearheading the national team, and more so, as one of their own [local coach].

Since taking the helm in 2015, Aliou Cissé has been a beacon of stability and inspiration for the Lions of Teranga. Under his guidance, the Senegal national team achieved notable milestones, including reaching the final of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, showcasing the country’s prowess in football and unity. Cissé’s departure raises questions about the future direction of Senegal’s footballing journey. His commitment to fostering a strong team spirit and nurturing talent has undoubtedly left a lasting impact on both players and fans alike. The coach’s ability to instil discipline, tactical brilliance, and a sense of national pride has been crucial in elevating the team to new heights.
