A suspected member of an armed robbery gang was Tuesday, 19th April 2022, arrested in the Ota area of Ogun State with a cut-to-size locally-made pistol and ten live cartridges.

The suspect, Waheed Ijiyemi, was accosted by a team of policemen, led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Onipanu, CSP Bamidele Job, while on routine patrol of the area.

The State Police Command, in a statement issued by DSP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, the police team accosted the suspect, who was riding an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle and asked him to alight for a check.

He was said to have yielded only to, thereafter, take to his heels.

That action of his gave him out as having a skeleton in his cupboard and, determined to get to the roots of the matter, the operatives went after him and successfully caught up with him.

It was in the process of searching through a handbag he had on him that the pistol and cartridges were recovered.

At first, when interrogated, the suspect, who had set out from Owode-Yewa en route toll-gate on the Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway, claimed that a friend gave him the items to be handed over to someone, and later changed his narrative when his accomplice at the toll-gate repeatedly called him in anger, saying it was taking him too long to catch up with him for their planned robbery operation.

He was arrested between 8:30 and 9:00 pm

The State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Bankole, has ordered the immediate transfer of the suspect to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.
