EASTER rollicking turned tragic for a young man, who embarked on a swimming adventure on Saturday, 30 March, at about 12:00 pm, and ended up drowning in a river in Odogbolu, Ogun State.

The deceased, Sunday Ogah, an Igede man from Benue State, had accompanied Otusanya Abayomi to his Eyinwa homestead in Odogbolu, apparently to celebrate the Easter festival, but went to swim at a river within the community, where he drowned.

Oblivious of the said friend’s tragic adventure, information later got to Otusanya that he had drowned at Eyinwa River.

In the aftermath of the sad incident, the distraught host friend, who resides at Igbe-Ilara in Ikorodu, Lagos State, on receipt of the information, reported the incident at the Odogbolu Divisional Police Headquarters, stating that he actually came to the community with the drowned man.

Otusanya stated in his report that the deceased “left him and other friends to an unknown destination, without notifying anyone”.

However, according to a statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), SP Omolola Odutola, “Upon receipt of the information, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Odogbolu detailed surveillance police officers, in collaboration with some local divers, to locate the corpse, but their efforts proved abortive”.

Continuing, the PPRO said, “Efforts are still ongoing to recover the corpse and further reach out to the family, to inform them of the sad occurrence”.

The state Commissioner of Police CP Alamutu Abiodun, has condoled with the family and loved ones of the deceased and assured that the Command remained committed to promoting public safety and preventing such tragedies in the future.

The CP further warned restive young persons to steer clear of rivers whose depth they cannot predict.
