YENI KUTI, the older sibling of Femi Kuti, an afrobeat artist who has received Grammy nominations, has disclosed the reason behind the departure of Funke, the former wife of the singer.

According to her, Funke decided to end the marriage because she was no longer having a heart-to-heart talk with her husband.

This revelation was made during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, as shared by Yeni Kuti.

Yeni asserted that Funke eventually expressed remorse for her decisions, expressing that if she had been aware of the things she knows now, she would not have initiated the separation from the singer.

Yeni shared, “I believe the dissolution of Femi and Funke’s marriage was caused by a breakdown in communication.

“Even now, Funke admits that if she had possessed the knowledge she has today, she most likely would have chosen to remain in the marriage. This is why I believe there was no proper understanding between them.”

“You see, understanding our community is crucial because our people have a mischievous streak. Whenever they come across something remarkable, especially a marriage, their primary focus is on how to undermine it.

“So, a lot of individuals have been advising her. It’s just like my situation, where people ask me, ‘Why do you continue to dance for your brother? Go ahead and establish your own musical group.’

“However, I told them, “What kind of band do I even aspire to create? Did I ever approach you, expressing my desire to form a band?”

Fela Was Iconic But Not A Good Father

Meanwhile, Yeni has said the late singer was though iconic and a role model but was not a good father.

Yeni said she never confronted her dad about not being a good father, but the late singer and his first son, Femi were always at loggerheads.

She said, “He (Fela) was not quite a good father. No (I never told him that he isn’t a good father). Maybe Femi, not me. Femi and Fela used to have battles. And Femi will give it to him straight.

“Shola and I, we were like timid. You know, they said, ‘When two elephants are fighting, the grass will keep quiet.

“I can remember one day, Fela just came and said, ‘Three of you are useless children’. Femi just said, ‘For what?’ Femi just started facing him and then they started facing each other. Shola and I will say, ‘It’s okay’. Fela will say, ‘No’. And Femi just said, ‘Let him go’.

I don’t think I have ever had that kind of confrontation with my father. Maybe because I was a woman.”

Why I Won’t Leave My Husband If He Cheats On Me

Responding to another question, Yeni said that she would not leave her marriage if her husband cheats on her.

Yeni said that her late father, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, had 27 wives and her mother didn’t leave the marriage.

She said,  “I won’t leave my husband if he is cheating. That is me. You can leave your own husband if he is cheating. That is you. Don’t judge me, I’m not judging you.

“My father had 27 wives, my mother didn’t go. It’s me that will now come and go because of one girl. It cannot happen.”
